A DRIVER will appear in court after allegedly performing a “dangerous” 60mph overtake in a residential street.

Police officers were conducting speed checks in Station Road, Parkeston, when they reportedly clocked a motorist travelling at the reckless speed.

They were reportedly seen to be overtaking another motorist at 60mph within the 30mph limit, with officers branding it highly “dangerous”.

Essex Police said the driver is now due in court after being reported for speeding and driving without due care and attention.

The incident came during a day of speed checks undertaken in Station Road throughout Thursday.

The road acts as a key link between Dovercourt and Harwich International Port and is used by thousands of motorists daily.

Officers captured several drivers in excess of the speed limit, with one caught at 42mph and another at 39mph.

“All those exceeding the limit will be receiving fines,” said the Harwich Community Policing Team.

Ramsey and Parkeston Parish Council chairman Bill Davidson said he fears someone will be killed before effective preventative speed measures are in place in Station Road.

“I am horrified by the thought of somebody even dreaming of overtaking at 60mph in a built-up area,” said Mr Davidson.

“We have seen all kinds of speeding with our own eyes and are concerned about the speeds some drivers come down Station Road.”

Mr Davidson said the parish council is finalising a project to install vehicle activated speed signs along the troubled road.

He confirmed funding has been secured for the scheme, adding: “We are serious about it. This is absolutely serious.

“To be honest, I think all the villages here should be a 20mph limit. These drivers speed in Parkeston, they speed everywhere.

“It seems like it has got to take some poor child or person to be killed before something is properly done about it.

“I am really concerned about the speeds around Station Road and in Parkeston in general, but Ramsey and the other nearby villages too.”
