ON a blustery day, when the sun never quite made it out, The Lobster Smack offered a sanctuary of warmth and great comfort food.
Heading along Haven Road, with rain whipping at the car windscreen, it felt like I was heading out to the middle of nowhere.
Then I turned into the carpark and there was the pub shining out like a beacon.
No wonder it has been a place of comfort to so many over the centuries.
Making a dash for the door I was relieved to enter the cosy pub, which is rated among Canvey’s best restaurants.
The pub was filled with people quietly enjoying their lunch.

The historic pub, which dates back to the 17th century and previously featured as one of the Echo’s pubs of the week, retains the lovely olde worlde feel, with its beautiful old wood beams.
A look at the menu revealed a nice selection of pub classics. I went for the hand-battered fish which was cooked until golden and crispy, served with chunky chips, tartare sauce and minted mushy peas.
I had not tried minted peas before so was looking forward to seeing what they were like.
I seated myself in one of the comfy chairs opposite the bar and relaxed. There was a low murmur of relaxed chat and I did not feel self-conscious eating alone as there was a nice friendly atmosphere.

When the food arrived the fish, with its halo of golden batter, took centre stage - as well as half the plate – followed by big chunky chips.
The was a satisfying crunch when breaking into the batter and the soft fish had been perfectly steamed inside.
The minted mushy peas were a bit of a revelation for me. The freshness of the mint and the creamy mushy peas gave the dish an uplift.
The chips were piping hot with a pleasing outer coating and the overall portions are generous.
Having filled up on tasty food I was ready to back out and face the elements.
There is some stunning scenery to take in with walks along the sea wall, but the wind was whipping so strongly that day, I thought better of it.
