This snapshot of Hadleigh High Street in 1920 shows a time when the road was quiet and people enjoyed a variety of amenities.
One solitary car can be seen on the road during this time when many residents would travel by foot for their daily shop.
The photo was sourced by Jon Wennington for the Facebook community group “Hadleigh Benfleet Essex” and shows the high street as it was in the 20th century.
The buildings in both photos were built in 1900 and show there were many amenities available for the people of Hadleigh.

One such business that can be seen in the image is Arthur Henry Yeaxlee.
According to hadleighhistory.org.uk, Arthur Henry Yeaxlee set up as a draper in Hadleigh.
By 1895 he opened the double-fronted shop in the High Street opposite the Castle Inn. He later took over a larger corner shop in the new by-pass road, next to the Kingsway cinema.
