THIS week, Southend seafront and Adventure Island were transformed into a TV set with film crews, actors and cameras taking over for two days.

A new comedy drama called Sweetpea, set to be aired on Sky Atlantic, had a series of scenes filmed in the city on Thursday and Tuesday.

It comes as many shows have been shot in the seaside resort.

Celebrity Antiques Road Trip, BBC

Back in June, ex-The Only Way is Essex star Gemma Collins, 42, and BBC Radio 1 DJ Melvin Odoom, 43, were shooting in Leigh and Westcliff for the hit BBC show Celebrity Antiques Road Trip.

The popular show revolves around antiques experts and celebrities setting off on road trips around the UK searching for rare items and competing to make the most money at auction.

Leigh tour guide Paul Carver, 53, took the radio star around the Leigh Heritage Centre, and Gemma descended on London Road’s Sally’s Out of Curiosity, owned by 72-year-old Sally Tyrie.

The episode is set to air on BBC Two at 7pm on November 28.

Shopping with Keith Lemon, ITV

Danny Dyer, 46, and Keith Lemon, played by 50-year-old Leigh Francis, visited Battlesbridge on March 13, 2022, for Shopping with Keith Lemon.

The pair went to several businesses in the area, including pub One Green Bottle, where Dyer pulled pints, and the Battlesbridge Antiques Centre.

The show sees Keith and a celebrity guest visit high streets and villages, and he gets an insight into their life.

The Crown, Netflix

December 2022 saw a burnt-out car, a damaged old vehicle and piles of rubble outside the Southend Council offices at the Civic Centre, in Victoria Avenue, for filming of the sixth and final season of the hit Netflix show.

A board on set by the Civic Centre read "The Crown, Derek Richard Strand and Ben Wilson, scene 51, take 1.”

Stars in the show include 67-year-old Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth, Elizabeth Debicki, 33, as Princess Diana, and Dominic West, 54, as Prince Charles.

EastEnders, BBC

The hit BBC One soap has visited the city on many occasions over the years.

Back in 1987, Pauline Fowler (Wendy Richard), Arthur Fowler (Bill Treacher) and Michelle Fowler (Susan Tully) filmed in the High Street, Pier Hill, Hartington Road, Western Esplanade, The Three Shells Cafe, Peter Pan’s Playground – now Adventure Island - and on the pier.

They were trying to find son and brother Mark, played by David Scarboro.

In June 2011, a storyline focused on Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty), who went on the run from her abusive ex Rob Grayson.

She got a ride to Southend, but the villain tracked her down and came face-to-face with her new boyfriend on the pier.

Other storylines shot include Shirley Carter (Linda Henry) and Heather Trott (Cheryl Ferguson) arrange a holiday to Southend to see George Michael, where they were joined by Dot Branning (June Brown) and Fatboy (Ricky Norwood) as Dot wanted to visit her half-sister Rose (Polly Perkins).

In 2013, scenes for Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) and Roxy Mitchell’s (Rita Simons) wedding was filmed in the city.

They shot the scenes in the early hours of the morning on October 4, where Alfie was seen chasing after and banging on the door of the plane.

In March 2022, Martin (James Bye) and Stacey (Lacey Turner) were spotted filming in Adventure Island before the heading into the sea on East Beach, Shoebury.

Even some of the Adventure Island staff became extras in the BBC One soap.
