A flood alert has been issued for parts of Southend today with the seafront and roads around Southchurch Park "at risk".

The Environment Agency has issued the flood alert for the Essex coast from Shoebury to Southend seafront, from Thorpe Esplanade to Chalkwell Esplanade, including Southchurch Park, urging residents and businesses to prepare for "likely" minor flooding.

Coastal roads and footpaths are set to be affected tonight between 9pm and 11pm today with the seafront and roads around Southchurch Park, Thorpe Hall Golf Club and Shoebury Common.

A Southend Coastguard spokesman commented: "The detailed forecast for those that use it is for a peak level at Southend of 3.89 mAODN at 10pm, Friday 24th November, which is 1.17m above tide tables, wind Force 5, north westerly. (mAODN is height above average sea level, for more info refer to local tide table).

"The current series of high spring tides will remain for the next few days. Take care on coastal roads and footpaths, and don't put yourself in unnecessary danger.

"Government is monitoring the situation and further alerts or warnings may be issued."
