A goat on the loose at Pitsea Recycling Centre forced the site to be evacuated and closed for the safety of visitors.

The ram, which was nicknamed Roger, had reportedly escaped from a nearby paddock.

Refuse workers sprung to action to clear the tip site while they tried to detain the animal.

A spokesperson for Essex County Council said: “Thank you to all staff on site at Pitsea for their quick thinking and action under pressure.

“The recycling centre is back open as usual and not at all ‘rammed’.”

Leigh Perry, manager of the nearby Essex Horse and Pony Protection Society, helped round-up the goat alongside other members of staff.

A spokesperson for the charity, which rescues and rehabilitates horses, ponies and donkeys, added: “With a bit of strategic barrier placing, the scared goat was soon reunited with his herd.”
