A MAN has been left suffering seizures and requiring surgery after a pub doorman threw him to the ground while he was already unconscious, a court has heard.

Christopher Lowe, 36, was working at the Plough pub in London Road, Westcliff, earlier this year when he removed the victim due to an issue inside the venue.

However, a “misjudgement” saw the victim thrown to the ground outside after he had passed out, and suffer a fracture jaw and eye socket, as well as cracked teeth.

Yesterday, Basildon Crown Court heard that while escorting the victim out, Lowe put his arm around the victim’s neck, eventually causing him to lose consciousness.

Lowe, of Weaverdale, Shoebury, claims he did not realise the victim was unconscious and dropped him on the pavement outside the pub.

The defendant admitted GBH without intent and was spared jail during yesterday’s hearing.

Amelia Norman, prosecuting, said: “Mr Lowe was arrested at the scene and interviewed by police the following day.

“He accepted his arm went around the victim’s neck but stated that was not his intention and he believed the victim was going to attack him.

“In an impact statement, the victim revealed he was having seizures prior to the incident which have worsened.”

The victim’s seizure medication has been increased which has been “life changing”, causing significant amounts of stress.

In an impact statement, the victim revealed he tried to take his own life following the ordeal because of his anxiety.

He will also require surgery to fix his eye socket which could result in a loss of eyesight and he is now self conscious of his cracked teeth.

Lucy Sweetland, mitigating for Lowe, said: “It is accepted that the defendant had reason to use some force against the victim through his employment.

“However, this became an assault because of his misjudgement. It wasn’t an act of aggression but a misjudgement in the application of force.

“The consequences for the victim are huge which Mr Lowe accepts and expresses remorse for.

“He has now surrendered his SIA door supervisor licence and stepped down as a director of his company.”

Judge Samantha Cohen handed Lowe a nine-month sentence suspended for two years.

Lowe was given a 40-day rehabilitation activity requirement and 80 hours of unpaid work.
