Six fire crews battled flooding for almost five hours at a block of flats in Thorpe Bay today. 

Firefighters were called to the flats in Station Road this morning at 9.10am as 17 flats and a lift shaft were hit by flooding.

Two crews from Southend worked alongside Shoebury, Hawkwell, Maldon and Ongar firefighters as they tackled the flooding at the flats for almost five hours.

They worked with water and electricity companies and Southend Council and left the scene at 1.58pm.

An Essex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman commented: "We were called to a report of flooding inside a property in Station Road, Thorpe Bay today at 9.10am.

The flooding was affecting 17 flats and a lift shaft.

"Crews from Southend (two), Shoebury, Hawkwell, Maldon and Ongar attended a pumped water from the building and used polybooms to protect properties.

"They worked with water and electricity companies and the local council, and left the scene at 1.58pm."
