A “pathetic” Christmas tree in Benfleet has prompted public outcry forcing the council to go back to the contractors.

The tree, on High Road, South Benfleet, was unveiled as part of festive celebrations throughout the town. However, it was met with ridicule by the public for its “embarrassing” appearance.

It drew criticism when photos of it were posted online, by a resident who described it as “looking more like a Christmas dog”. Another resident blasted it as “disgraceful, pathetic, embarrassing, and shameful”.

Kieron Bowker, People’s Independent Party councillor for Victoria, commented: “That is dreadful. I will ask as to who put this together. Or didn't.”

Jack Forrt, 28, of London Road, told the Echo residents had urged the councillor to “do something about it then”.

He said: "It's just embarrassing. If the council decides to use taxpayers’ money for things like this, they should do it properly or not at all.

“Luckily, the Benfleet Christmas Action Group are switching on their own, much better Christmas tree at the other end of the High Road on Friday, so our town should look much more festive after that.

“Once again, it's the local community coming to the rescue of our embarrassing borough council.”

The Benfleet Christmas Action Group has funded an additional tree, which will be lit on the lawn outside the Oasis Christian Fellowship Church at 5pm.

Meanwhile, Castle Point Council has vowed to put the tree right in time for Christmas.

Dave Blackwell, leader of the council, told the Echo: “We recognise that this display no longer meets ours or residents’ vision for Christmas celebrations.

“We are working with our contractors to reshape the tree and ensure the decorations are improved as quickly as possible.”
