A STATUE in honour of Sir David Amess will be placed on Chalkwell Seafront near the lifeguard station as a lasting tribute to the beloved former MP.

Southend West MP, Anna Firth met with Lady Julia Amess on Friday to decide the location of the highly anticipated statue, in memory of Sir David, who was tragically killed in an attack at a constituency surgery in 2021.

The statue is to be placed on Chalkwell seafront, close to the Chalkwell Lifeguards where it will look out over the estuary, Southend Pier and the Crowstone, all of which were Sir David's "favourite parts of Southend".

Lady Amess and Ms Firth went to chosen spot for the statue on Friday, designed by Andrew Lilley, after Lady Amess was presented with four possible options.

Lady Amess said: “I am delighted to have been able to work with Anna Firth MP and Southend City Council to decide on a location for the statue to David.

“It was crucial to ensure that the location was perfect, as I know David would have settled for nothing less.

“Being able to incorporate all of David’s favourite aspects of Southend, but especially the seafront played a key part in the choosing of this location and it’s one I am sure he would’ve loved.

“David only ever wanted what was best for Southend and I have no doubt he would be so proud of what the city has become since he died.

“I hope that the statue will serve as a reminder of David’s total dedication to the City of Southend and its people. As a family, we are so proud of all he achieved. He is missed every day - but his light remains."

Southend MP Sir David Amess was tragically killed in a terrorist attack at a constituency surgery in 2021, an incident which shook Southend to its core.

Ms Firth said: “Lady Julia chose a location that showcases Sir David’s favourite parts of Southend, being close to the sea and with a wonderful view of the pier.

“It is my most sincere hope that people can look upon the statue and remember not just a fantastic local MP and one of Southend’s greatest servants, but the friend that all of Southend had in Sir David.

“I cannot wait for the statue to be ready; it will be a welcome addition to our already gorgeous coastline."
