HUNDREDS of people have turned out to watch a leading Southend music group perform Christmas songs to get the community into the festive spirit.

The multi-award-winning Music Man Project, which provides accessible music tuition leading to inspirational performances to those with learning disabilities, held their 22nd Christmas concert at Highlands Methodist Church on Friday.

David Stanley BEM, the founder of the group, says the venue in Sutherland Boulevard, Leigh, was “full to capacity thanks to between 250 and 300 people coming out and showing their support”.

It comes after the Music Man Project has had a sensational year for performances, which included the pupils performing at Speaker’s House, inside the Houses of Parliament, in November for disability history month.

David said: “The 22nd Music Man Project Christmas Concert was absolutely fantastic.

“We’ve been doing the annual Christmas concert for 22 years, and many people say it really starts their holiday season as it allows everyone to come together and enjoy hearing the traditional carols performed by the amazing pupils.

“It also gives us another perfect opportunity to showcase the fantastic talent of the pupils who work so hard to bring smiles and joy to people.

“I thank everyone who came to our 22nd Music Man Project Christmas Concert for showing their support.”

In addition to the community, Southend West MP Anna Firth and Mayor of Southend Stephen Habermel were also in attendance.

Ms Firth said: “It has been a stellar year for Music Man – I am so proud of their incredible performances.

“From Speaker’s House to Southend, they simply grow and grow in scope.

“Sir David [Amess] was such a huge advocate of the Music Man Project, and I am so pleased that they are going from strength to strength.”

The group has also performed for members of the Royal Family at the Royal Albert Hall, where they even received a standing ovation from The King

Before Sir David’s death on October 15, 2021, he supported the Music Man Project for more than a decade, before becoming its president.

The group also sang at the former Southend West MP’s funeral.
