A “SUPERHERO” teenager battling a devastating cancer diagnosis had the day out of a lifetime as a West Ham mascot.

Oscar Ray Fairs, 14, from Benfleet, and is an aspiring goalkeeper having been on the books at West Ham since he was a boy.

However, in August, Oscar was given the heartbreaking news he had a 7cm tumour on his brain and was later diagnosed with Ependymoma.

The inspirational teen has since undergone seven surgeries, two rounds of chemotherapy as well as radiotherapy as he continues his cancer battle.

His mum, Natalie Fairs, said: “It has now spread to the left side of his brain, and unfortunately that has given more complications to Oscar’s diagnosis.

“However, we will not stop until this is cured. The first round of chemotherapy has showed it has broken down, so there is hope.

“We won’t give up, no matter what.

“Despite everything Oscar has gone through, he still has his adorable, brave, smile on his face. He is incredible and just simply a superhero.”

Earlier this month, Oscar was invited to be a mascot at West Ham with goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski giving the family his box for the day.

Oscar also got to walk out onto the pitch with goalkeeper Alphonse Areola a “dream come true” for the boy who is a goalkeeper for West Ham’s youth team.

On Sunday, family friends organised a football charity event, which raised more than £9,000, taking the total to more than £30,000 raised to support the family.

Natalie added: “We would like to thank everyone for their support, from the community, to neighbours, to charities, to local businesses, and to family and friends. From donations, events, and those who have braved the shave for Oscar to give him the confidence to remove his beanie hat.

“It has been an absolutely overwhelming experience in such a traumatic time. Oscar cried his eyes out to me, saying how do I pay this back. We will pay it back by fighting this cancer.

“We are in a constant front line battle, but with the support it gives us hope and strength to keep fighting.”

A GoFundMe is still open to support the family who have had to spent close to £20,000 on hotel stays, parking, bills, and food as Oscar continues his cancer battle.
