Inspirational south Essex heroes are celebrating after being recognised in the New Year Honours list.

The release of the New Year Honours provides an opportunity to celebrate individual outstanding achievements and contributions to our society, with this year’s list including a total of 1,227 recipients.

Among those who have received honours are two family members of a British backpacker, from Wickford, who was murdered in New Zealand.

Grace Millane was strangled to death in a hotel in Auckland the day before her 22nd birthday on December 1 2018. Her murderer Jesse Shane Kempson was found guilty by a unanimous verdict in November the following year.

After her death, her mother, Gillian Millane, and cousin, Hannah O’Callaghan, co-founded a charity in her name called Love Grace, which aims to “empower victims of domestic abuse.”
