A YOUNG man is fighting for his life after a serious assault in the early hours in Rayleigh High Street.

At 1.40am yesterday morning, there were reports of a disturbance close to a taxi rank where the victim was assaulted and briefly lost consciousness.

He is receiving treatment in hospital for a serious head injury, with his condition described as life-threatening.

Essex Police has made no arrests and enquiries are ongoing.

Acting Chief Inspector Danny Barnes said: “At this stage, our enquiries lead us to be believe this was an isolated incident and there is no wider threat to the public.

“At this stage, our priority is to gain the accounts of people who witnessed the incident or have any footage of it, so I would urge anyone with information to please come forward.

“Please cite incident 95 of December 31.”
