A beloved great grandmother who celebrated her 103rd birthday has been called “the original Essex girl” by her family.

Daisy Smith, who lives in the Brooklands Care Home, in Eastwood, was surrounded by her family and friends yesterday as staff at the home hosted a party in her honour.

Daisy, who has two children and four great children living in Rochford, was a dressmaker throughout her career and grew up in Dagenham before moving to Chadwell Heath.

Grandchild Anita Darby said: “We always used to call her the original Essex girl, she went to a centenarian afternoon tea event recently and she was the life and soul of the event, she is an absolute social butterfly.

“She always says that the Fifties were her favourite decade due to the dresses, the music and the culture and she was coming along on holiday with us lot at the age of 94.”

Great-grandchild Sophie Darby said: “She is always bubbly and smiling.”
