A DOG could not be saved after reportedly being stranded on a sandbank a mile out from shore sparking a rescue mission by emergency services. 

Southend's coastguard team, the the RNLI lifeboat and hovercraft were called after reports of two people and a dog in the water in the vicinity of Shoebury on Saturday.

Two people were taken ashore following the incident at about 1.35pm. 

The Echo understands the dog had got stuck on a sandbank. 

A spokesman for the HM Coastguard Southend said sadly the dog was not found. 

They said: "A Southend Coastguard Rescue Team, Southend RNLI inshore lifeboat and Southend Hovercraft were sent to a report from a member of the public of two people and a dog in the water in the vicinity of Shoebury yesterday at approximately 1.35pm.

"Both people were safely taken ashore but, after a thorough search by the lifeboat, the dog was not found."
