Forecasters say snow will become "more widespread" this afternoon as a serious weather warning has been issued for Essex.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for ice, which is in place from 3pm today until 3am tomorrow, as snowfall is forecast across the county today.

Experts in Essex have warned snow showers will become "more widespread" for a time this afternoon.

A spokesman for MetCast, which provides AI-enhanced weather forecasts for Essex, says: "Snow showers becoming more widespread for a time this afternoon, risk of ice in places.

"Met Office warning in force until 3am Tuesday."

Ice and small amounts of snow could lead to slippery surfaces in a few places, resulting in some injuries from falls, the Met Office warns.

These weather conditions could also lead to some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

Essex Highways has warned drivers to "plan ahead" due to this, with gritters being sent out on its 49 salting routes from 2pm until 5pm today.
