A STUNNING home in a old school in Shoebury has been placed on the market for £315,000.
The one-bedroom property is in Old School Court, Hinguar Street, and is described as a “truly exceptional” by estate agents.
The property, which boasts 17ft high ceilings and some original architecture, was originally an infant classroom of the Victorian Hinguar School.
It was part of the first phase of the Hinguar School by Dale Knapping, who amassed a large fortune from the development of the brickworks in South Shoebury, serving the rapid growth of Southend in the middle of the 19th century.
It is understood that the red bricks are called “Shoebury bricks” which were more than likely sourced from Dale Knapping’s brick field.
The site has since undergone a stunning refurbishment to create a unique but modernised home.
Hunt Roche, which is marketing the property, say: “The home boasts a distinctive design with full-height windows and impressive 17ft high ceilings.
“The modern elements include underfloor heating, a beautiful fitted kitchen, ground-floor guest WC, striking glass and steel balustrade that extends across the open-plan bedroom and a luxurious four-piece ensuite.”
The Hinguar Primary School is now located on the edge of Shoebury Garrison and is within walking distance to East Beach.
The origins of the old Hinguar School, which previously stood in Hinguar Street, reportedly goes back to 1862.
By 1885, there were 370 children on the school roll, and a new school, the old building in Hinguar Street was constructed.
Initially the building was for the infant children, but in 1903 it was extended to provide a junior/senior block so that the whole school was on single site.
At the end of the school year – 2011 to 2012 – the children left from a building had stood for more than 100 years.
The property comprises of a number of new, modern features, alongside original Victorian architecture.
There is a fully-equipped kitchen and dining area at the rear, with a breakfast bar.
The living room has an impressive chimney breast adorned with high gloss porcelain tiling inset with a contemporary electric fireplace.
The first floor is accessible via a turned staircase with an elegant glass and steel balustrade.
This is where the bedroom is which overlooks the living room area and has access to a four-piece en-suite.
