A "huge" oak tree was toppled next to a car wash last night, as winds as high as 60 miles per hour were recorded in parts of south Essex.

Emergency services rushed to West Road in Westcliff at around 10pm, where the tree was blocking the road.

Storm Isha caused chaos and brought down trees across the country, as gusts of up to 60 miles per hour were recorded at Shoebury.

In Benfleet, residents, police officers and councillors banded together to remove a tree which had fallen on a main road late last night.

The tree was blocking Vicarage Hill in Benfleet, and there were fears it could cause further traffic issues in the morning.

Essex County councillor Andrew Sheldon said: "All of the Essex Highways Emergency Response Teams were already on emergency call-outs and there was no guarantee they could get to it before the morning rush hour."

Therefore, two Castle Point Essex Police officers, Castle Point councillor Andrew Thornton and resident James Cutler used a chainsaw to clear the road themselves.

The tree was successfully removed by the early hours of this morning.
