BASILDON’S mayor is to step back from duties for the foreseeable after being diagnosed with cancer.

Luke Mackenzie, councillor for Pitsea South East confirmed he has sadly received a cancer diagnosis.

He has served as Basildon mayor since 2022. Mr Mackenzie was first elected as Basildon councillor for four years in 2008, before returning as a councillor in 2018.

Mr Mackenzie said he would not be giving more details on his cancer diagnosis at this stage but said he will be starting chemotherapy.

Deputy mayor Yetunde Adeshile will be stepping in while he undergoes treatment.

In a statement, he said: “Unfortunately, I have been diagnosed with cancer.

“While I am still exploring my options, the NHS are opting to start with chemotherapy. I don’t know the impact this will have on me until it starts. I have been told that some people are completely fine with it while others struggle.

“I wish to thank the NHS and its staff for all the support and care they have given me.

“Currently, I am trying to rest, absorb the information and plan the best route forward. For now, this will mean taking a step back from my mayor and councillor duties.

“The deputy mayor will be stepping in for now and will chair the next full council meeting.

“I have a good support network around me for anything I need.

“Thank you to all those who have been in touch and offered support. It’s humbling how many people care about and are willing to support me.”

Luke was born in Basildon, attending St Teresa’s and Mayflower Schools. He has a degree in Economics and Politics from the University of Westminster.

Craig Rimmer, fellow councillor responsible for Pitsea South East ward, said: “It is devastating news.

“Luke is not just my ward colleague but a personal friend of more than 15 years. It has been a great pleasure and privilege working with him in Pitsea for Pitsea.

“He led on bringing in the Public Space Protection Order and Basildon’s Pollinator Policy. The two of us have been fighting against the incinerator together.

“He is young and tough, and I am betting on him to beat this. But he won’t be doing it alone, as he has got family and friends who care for him deeply.”
