A VILE abuser threatened to kill his ex partner before choking her to the point “she thought she was going to die”.

Brandon Day, 24, carried out a campaign of abuse against his victim over three months, repeatedly threatening her and choking her.

The abuse cumulated in an incident where Day dragged the victim into a home in front of neighbours while choking her.

After an argument, the victim attempted to leave her home as Day grabbed her and dragged her inside as neighbours watched on. Horrified neighbours called the police and day was arrested.

He was charged with intentional strangulation, assault by beating and assault occasioning Actual Bodily Harm.

Day pleaded guilty on November 15 and appeared in Basildon Crown Court yesterday where he was spared jail but ordered to complete a rehabilitation programme.

Recorder Tina Harrington said: “I have read the victim impact statement and she said at one point she was unable to breathe and thought you were going to kill her. I take into account you have some relevant previous convictions including a 2015 conviction of battery against a woman.

“In 2016 there was a further offence involving violence against women and in 2019 you had a harassment offence where someone was put in the fear of violence.”

Prior to the final incident, Day was involved in a series of violent arguments with the victim. In one, the victim was at home when Day grabbed her causing her to fall over electrical wiring, Day then grabbed the victim by her hair and pulled her into the bedroom where he choked her.

Weeks later the pair were arguing as Day grabbed and pushed the victim to the floor causing her to fall. She tried to escape and Day allegedly said “I’m going to kill you in a couple of hours”.

Another incident saw Day place his hands over the victim’s mouth and nose, as she ran to get away Day grabbed her from behind causing her to fall over and injure her lip again.

Recorder Harrington also considered mitigation of Day including his ADHD diagnosis, his witnessing of domestic abuse as a child and the fact he was a victim of a recent random attack. Day, now of Witard Road, Norwich, was sentenced to 24 months suspended for two years, 35 rehabilitation requirement activity days, 150 unpaid work hours and a fine of £1500.
