METAL bollards designed to stop vehicles driving over the pavement to skip McDonald's queues have been installed by Southend Council.

They have been installed to protect pedestrians, as motorists have been known to drive onto the pavement alongside Eastern Avenue, Southend.

Kevin Buck, councillor responsible for highways, transport and parking, said: "More safety schemes are going in, this time at the St Luke's ward.

"There have been reports of cars and mopeds driving over the pavement to access McDonald's and other places, to avoid the queues.

"We are taking action to protect all residents in all wards across the city."
