A LONG-standing carpet store is set to leave its home of more than 20 years as part of plans to create a new restaurant in Pitsea.

R and R Carpets is set to finalise a move to Basildon town centre in coming weeks and is hoping it could boost to business after the owner admitted it has been hard to attract new customers.

Richard Hallet, 42, revealed the proposed move after plans were submitted to Basildon Council to convert the shop, in Northlands Pavement, into a new restaurant and takeaway.

Mr Hallet admitted trade has been tough in recent years and fears the businesses location, near Pitsea Market, has negatively impacted trade.

However, the business will remain open until all plans are finalised.

He said: “We have a place we are looking to open in Basildon town centre, and we would like to keep a small shop open in Pitsea if possible.

“We have been in Pitsea for 20 years, there is not much diversity of trade there and that is not bringing enough people here.

“The market somewhat blocks us off, people are not coming down to the centre shopping for carpets and for the past three years, showroom effectiveness has been hard.

“We have repeat business, but we don’t often get new trade there so when we have a massive showroom, we must look at that business model and look to adapt.

“I hope the site will be turned into a proper restaurant, because right now, Pitsea does not have one.

“It will be something to look forward to.”

Mr Hallett added that he is hopeful the change of use will be signed off.

“We are hoping to move but we remain open,” Mr Hallett said.

The change of use application submitted by LCP Property Investments LTD aims to gain approval for the site to be operated as both a restaurant and takeaway.

The plan was submitted to Basildon Council earlier this month and will be voted on at a later date.
