THUGS armed with “machete” attempted to force their way into a home just minutes before a man was assaulted and left with a “cut”.

Essex Police is probing two separate reports - which the force believes could be linked - in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Initially, at roughly 12.40am, police were called to reports of a group attempting to force entry into a home in Bull Lane, Rayleigh.

Less than ten minutes later, police and the ambulance service were called to an assault in Bardfield Way, Rayleigh.

During the incident a man “suffered an injury to his hand” and social media were rife with reports yesterday of a gang of thugs armed with a machete being seen in the area.

Julie Gooding, councillor responsible for Hawkwell West ward, said: “I hadn’t been made aware of this incident, but I hope the victims are well.

“It is something we never want to hear.

“I totally reiterate the calls for witnesses to come forward and anyone who can help, please do.

“The fact we have CCTV in the area, I am hopeful this can be concluded quickly.”

Officers believe the two incidents could be linked and are now urging any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “Shortly after 12.40am, we were called to an address in Bull Lane, Rayleigh, following reports of suspects attempting to force entry to an address.

“A short time later, at around 12.50am, we were called by our ambulance service colleagues to reports of an assault in Bardfield Way, Rayleigh.

“It was found a man had suffered an injury to his hand.

“Enquiries are ongoing, and officers are keeping an open mind as to whether these two incidents are linked.

“We are asking anyone who may have witnessed anything or have any further information to contact us.

“Please quote incident number 30 of 13 March when providing information.”
