WORK has finally begun on a £1.5 million project to replace Thorney Bay Pavilion on Canvey.

Today, spades were struck into the ground for the first time as the start of work to build a new Pavilion at Thorney Bay got underway.

The £1.5 million project to create a new pavilion has suffered a number of set-backs since it was first conceived in 2016.

However, contractors today marked the start of nine months of construction works ahead of a proposed opening in 2025.

The plans will see the construction of a new build pavilion, associated external works, and car park extension improvements.

The project forms part of the regeneration programme for Canvey seafront by providing improvements to the facilities and visitor experience.

Dave Blackwell, leader of Castle Point Council, said: “Thorney Bay is an important area of Canvey that many residents enjoy.

"The construction of a new Pavilion and cafe will serve the Borough well and should entice more people to come to enjoy our beaches each year.”

The construction phase will begin with work on the car park extension and excavating and preparation of the site for the installation of the piling mat, used as part of the deep piling to secure the new pavilion..

Construction is due to complete in early December with formal handover of the new facilities scheduled for early January 2025.

Leading Colchester-based property and construction consultancy Ingleton Wood is providing full planning, design, project management, and contract administration services from inception to completion for the regeneration scheme at Thorney Bay.

Andrew Marchant, senior associate and building surveyor at Ingleton Wood, added: “Through our sustainable designs and innovative measures, we are not only helping to regenerate the cherished seafront at Thorney Bay, but also to create a modern, vibrant and inclusive space for long-term benefit and enjoyment.

“After working closely with the council to secure the £1.52m Coastal Community Funding, we are thrilled work has started and look forward to supporting the delivery of the works through to completion.

"We hope the regeneration project serves as inspiration for further sustainable development and environmental conservation across the region.”
