A NEW Domino's takeaway will open in Westcliff's former Army and Navy store as plans have been given the go ahead.

The long-standing family-run business - at 297 London Road - closed down last after 73 years selling combat clothing, bomber jackets, outfits for cadets, and much more, as owner Brian Burns retired the business.

Now, the unit is set to be transformed into the popular pizza takeaway as Southend Council approved plans this week.

The takeaway will operate between 11am and 11pm, and will generate a number of full-time and part-time employment opportunities. The majority of the shopfront will be retained but painted dark grey to match the chain's branding.

Two objections were raised - after 24 neighbours were individually notified and a site notice was displayed - over concerns including access, noise and parking.

Southend Council's planning officer said in their report that these were noted, but were not considered "justifiable reasons for refusal".

There are currently two Domino's locations in the Southend borough - one Earls Hall Parade and one in Ness Road, Shoebury.
