SHOPPERS in Essex are being warned over a food product pulled from the shelves at a major supermarket amid a "police investigation" into fears they have been tampered with.

Essex Trading Standards has issued a warning to residents over the packs of 99p Aldi tortilla wraps which have been pulled because of a "possible presence of metal".

Signature Flatbreads UK, the maker of Village Bakery 8 Tortilla Wraps, has taken the decision to recall the product and is "working with the relevant food and police agencies to investigate the cause of the contamination", the Daily Mail reports.

An Essex Trading Standards spokesman said: "Signature Flatbreads UK is taking the precautionary step of recalling Village Bakery 8 Tortilla Wraps White because of a possible presence of metal, as the product may have been tampered with.

"The possible presence of metal makes this product unsafe to eat.

"No other Aldi or Signature Flatbreads UK products are affected."

The product recall includes all best before dates up to and including April 29.

They added: "If you have bought the above product do not eat it. Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund. Any customers with queries or concerns can contact Aldi on 0800 042 0800 or visit help.aldi.co.uk."
