A POPULAR south Essex pub hailed as the "best in the area" is set to re-open after a six-figure refurbishment.

Grade II listed The Hoy and Helmet pub, in Benfleet High Street, closed its doors at the end of February for a huge revamp, both internally and externally.

The pub is set to unveil an outdoor bar, new toilets, and a massive new TV which barman Miguel Balina-Hall told the Echo will "be great for the Euros".

Revellers will also enjoy a covered area with heated booths so people can enjoy a pint at the outside bar all year round.

Regulars who described the pub as the best in Benfleet were left wondering where they will go, despite their excitement for its renovation to be revealed.

However, now they will likely not have to wait too long for a pint in the Hoy and Helmet again, as a spokesman revealed to the Echo today that the pub is due to re-open at the end of this month.

The Greene King venue is thought to date from the early 15th or 16th century.

According to Benfleet History, The Hoy was used as a public meeting place and coroner's court room in the 19th century. Until 1922, the pub was called The Hoy, however in 1922 its name was changed to The Hoy and Helmet.
