"MACHETES" have been seized by police after teenage boys were heard talking about having weapons on them at a south Essex station.

British Transport Police and Essex Police officers attended Benfleet station last night, where they were approached by a passenger who reported two teenage boys discussing being in possession of weapons.

Police seized a number of knives and two boys, aged 14 and 15, have been arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon.

The Echo understands officers recovered two machetes and a flip knife.

British Transport Police is leading the investigation.

A spokesman for the force commented: "Officers were called to Benfleet railway station just after 10.10pm yesterday.

"Essex Police also attended, and while responding to the incident, a passenger approached officers to report two teenagers discussing being in possession of weapons, and pointed them out.

"Knives were recovered in connection and two boys aged 14 and 15 were arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon. Enquiries are ongoing."
