A GROUP offering “incredible” clubs to young people with disabilities is set to have its future at a country park secured.

Basildon Council is set to approve two leases for Wat Tyler Country Park, in Pitsea, as the transformation at the park continues.

The first will see the renewal of the existing lease to the existing tenant for the marina.

The second is for the permanent lease for the “Discovery Zone” within the popular park.

The Discovery Zone is currently occupied under a flexible arrangement with Brighter Opportunities for Special People (BOSP).

BOSP provide services and offer clubs to young people with disabilities. The lease will make their offerings permanent.

Jeff Henry, Conservative councillor responsible for health, wellbeing, leisure, arts and culture, said: “It is a great park with a lot going on all the time. Leases are an operational aspect and have to be all done properly.

“BOSP is in particular is a fantastic organisation. They have been great. It is an amazing way of working and providing an incredible opportunity for families.

“Parks are there for everybody and BOSP have been instrumental in helping parents with disabled children.

“It is really good news.

“We have launched changing places at Wat Tyler and Lake Meadows. It is important to understand that changing places facilities and accessible play makes it possible for children to visit, otherwise there isn’t that opportunity.

“It is right to put them on a formal lease as they are a great partner.”

This comes after the popular miniature railway at the park could also be restored, following a new lease, after being out of use for nearly five years.

A Basildon Council spokesman said: “The Discovery Zone is located near to the main Wat Tyler Centre and is currently occupied under a flexible arrangement with Brighter Opportunities for Special People (BOSP).

“The new lease will formalise these arrangements.

“BOSP is a service open to children and young people from birth to 25 years of age with disabilities or life limiting illnesses, offering a wide variety of clubs and parent/carer support at evenings, weekends and school holidays - providing fun and exciting activities with social opportunities.”
