A NEW discount shop is taking shape in the former Poundland in Southend High Street as an opening date has been revealed.

Poundstretcher has confirmed it will open its new shop at 113 High Street on Tuesday, April 9, as it takes over the old pound shop that has been empty for more than six years.

Photos from Gaz de Vere show the shelves being filled today with the shopfront finished, as a sign in the window confirms its opening date.

Since Poundland closed its High Street shop, it has opened new stores in both the Royals Shopping Centre and the Victoria Shopping Centre.

Poundstretcher already has a store in the city, at Greyhound Retail Park, but bosses previously told the Echo the new store is an additional site, and the current discount store will remain open as normal.

A spokesman for Poundstretcher said: “This store opening is a part of the series of new store openings across the UK by the Poundstretcher group.”

This comes as a number of new businesses are set to open their doors in the High Street, including American burger giant Wendy's and fast-growing chain Black Sheep Coffee.

The British Heart Foundation has also submitted two planning applications to take over the former Job Centre site at 107-109 High Street.

The High Street job centre, which was set up in the wake of the pandemic, shut its doors in July last year.
