GoFundMe to help adapt biker's home after Basildon crash

Colin Smith, 65, was riding his motorbike last week when he was involved in a crash with a car in Broadmayne.

Despite surgeons attempts to initially reattach his leg, complications meant it was amputated and his family are now pleading for help to raise enough cash to help him adapt his home.

Colin suffered a series of injuries during the crash, including five broken ribs and burns to his leg when he was dragged along the road under his car.

Police closed the road for several hours after the crash and are continuing to appeal for witnesses to come forward.

Colin’s daughter, Shannon Weedon, 31, said: “It is honestly heartbreaking.

“He sustained five broken ribs, and then severe burns to his leg as he was dragged along the road under the car and the engine burned his leg.

“Initially after the accident they reattached his leg to try to keep it alive, but after complications they have had to amputate it.

“It has had a massive impact on him. He is an independent man who drives heavy goods for a living.

“We are just all devastated, more for him and how his life will have to change now.”

Essex Police launched an appeal just days after the crash for witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.

The GoFundMe has already raised £1,500 to help adapt Colin’s home.

Shannon added: “We set it up as his current living situation is unsuitable,. He is in a mobile home with uneven ground, and steps to even just access it.

“Dad is very well-known and loved man, who would help anyone he could.

“So, the aim was to show him just how much he is loved.

“We have been completely blown away. We just wanted to thank everyone who has been able to help us and has given words of support and love.

“We are truly touched at the generosity of everyone.”
