A Teejay Caton hat-trick helped Barry Athletic to win the Supporters’ Cup trophy at Jenner Park on Sunday, against Penarth Town.

Nearly 250 fans saw the two Vale of Glamorgan Premier League clubs face off in the divisional cup final, and they will play each other again next Sunday in the Barry Cup final.

Donated to the Vale League by Barry Town Supporters Club in 1946, Athletic were the cup’s first winners in 1947, under their original name of Cadoxton Albion, repeating the feat this year.

It was the Barry club who took the lead, Caton taking the ball past the ‘keeper in the 13th minute before cutting back to shoot with his right foot.

Penarth hit back eight minutes later with David Shallis rifling in from the edge of the box.

In a pulsating last five minutes before the break, there were goals at both ends.

Ciaran Webb restored the Barry Athletic lead, forcing his way through the defence before shooting from close range, while a defensive error made it 3-1.

However, Penarth showed that the game was far from over, with Shallis crossing from the right for Paul Beedell to head in at the near post.

With Penarth needing to score goals, they pushed forward in the second half, but were caught on the break by a ball over to the top to Caton, who slotted it home to make it 4-2 in the 55th minute.

Although continuing to look for a way back into the match, Penarth were unable to find the net again.

Two late goals for Athletic made the scoreline look emphatic, but harsh upon Penarth.

In the 88th minute, it took Caton two attempts from close range to get the ball over the line before he could celebrate his hat-trick, while a cross from the right saw Alfie Tipples score in injury time at the back post to make it 6-2.
