DAREVDEVIL Richard Anderson plans to push himself to the limit as he attempts to become the first person to complete a 3,300-mile trip around the UK on a small jet ski.
Richard, 51, from Shoebury, is aiming to put his name in the record books and raise as much cash for charity as possible as he takes on the challenge.
He was inspired to take on the challenge after seeing the “incredible” care two of his friends received at Havens Hospices, in Southend, and the support they received from the Marie Curie cancer charity.
Setting off from Southend Pier next month, Richard will jet ski around the whole of the UK’s coast across ten days – although if weather conditions work against him it could take 14.
He hopes to raise “as much as possible” for both charities and is having his old jet ski fixed up and upgraded this weekend in preparation for the challenge.
He said: “One of my work colleagues got ill and passed away around eight years ago and received care from Marie Curie. The nurses were amazing, and it has been in the back of my mind ever since.
“I work as a self-employed builder and one of my customers fell suddenly ill in December and passed away earlier this year. It was then I decided to do this challenge.”
Richard has since been in contact with Havens Hospices and Marie Curie, to get their support for the fundraiser and official sponsorship logos for his jet ski.
“This has never been done before and I have applied for a new world record,” he added.
“I have 60 litres of storage on the jet ski, I have spare emergency fuel and a dry backpack.
“My son is taking two weeks off work as well to drive the car around to support me, as we have to take the jet ski out of the water at night.
“I will be on it for ten hours a day if my body can handle it and I will be sleeping on beaches or wherever I can find.
“People have been so supportive and I have managed to raise £1,500 so far before even hitting the water.
“I am extremely chuffed.”
