A CHARITY shop has risen from the ashes and will open its new site this weekend almost a year after a fire destroyed its previous base.

Harp, a Southend charity supporting homeless people across the city, was devastated after a fire broke out at its charity shop in Hamlet Court Road, Westcliff, in May last year.

The building suffered significant damage and Harp has been unable to return.

Now, the charity will open a new shop at the former Boots in Hamlet Court Road – just metres away from the previous shop.

Anna Wallace, head of charity shops at Harp, says the charity is excited to be back in the Hamlet Court community.

She said: “We are so pleased to be reopening a shop in the area and to be part of the strong Hamlet Court Road community once again.

“We’re hopeful it will be popular with new and old customers alike and everything we raise will support Harp’s local services for people experiencing homelessness.”

During the fire, the charity lost a significant amount of stock and equipment which was damaged by smoke and launched an urgent appeal for donations.

The charity has confirmed the the former building is still undergoing renovations and repairs following the devastating fire and the charity shop will not be returning to the site.

Matt Dent, newly appointed councillor for business, offered his support to the resilient charity.

He said: “The return of Harp to the Hamlet Court Road business community is very welcome news.

“The fire was a devastating blow to a really important local charity, and it rising again from the metaphorical and literal ashes is a testament to both Harp’s versatility and the fantastic business community of the area.

“I wish the Harp shop the best of luck, supporting the charity’s fantastic work helping some of the most vulnerable in our community.”

Harp is always on the lookout for volunteers and donations for their five shops in the area.
