A HISTORIC Essex venue has changed owners and is set to undergo a huge renovation for more than £1million.

The Swan, in Bank Street, Braintree, has changed ownership again and is due to become Ocean’s Braintree – a lavish restaurant and venue.

The grade II listed building has operated as a pub and venue for many years, and it was recently revived earlier this tear by resident Ken Tang.

Ken relaunched the boozer at the time and was determined to get rid of the previous negative reputation the business was known for.

But now American-based Essex entrepreneur Barrie Drewitt-Barlow has stated it is under new management.

It’s going to be transformed into a brand-new restaurant and venue called Ocean’s Braintree, and there will be £1.5million spent on renovating the building.

He said: “We are extremely happy to announce that as of May 14, we have officially exchanged contracts on the building currently known as The Swan 26 Bank Street, Braintree, Essex, CM7 1UL.

“It will be undergoing a much-needed renovation and upgrade, to restore the building back to its original beauty, with a modern interior filled with contemporary art from some of the world’s newest emerging talent.

“At Ocean’s, our aim is to give you a dynamic, fine dining experience with the superior quality of a traditional Pan Asian restaurant, with a fusion of the Caribbean!

“Get ready to lose yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Ocean’s, as our energetic managers, talented table staff, and dynamic DJs create an experience to remember.

“Not only will the venue offer dining on the lower floors, but will also offer private dining on the upper floors, and we have plans to convert the derelict barns attached to the main building.

“To offer a wedding venue and function rooms with a courtyard area for overspill.”

This follows on from when Ocean Chapman, from Braintree, met Barrie after appearing on Channel 5’s Rich House, Poor House, which filmed last year.

The show followed Ocean and her family swap their two-bed flat for Barrie’s £6million holiday home.

By the end of filming, Ocean and Barrie became firm friends and he kindly kick-started her dream baby food business, and they were discussing other possible ventures.

Excitingly, Ocean is the part business owner and executive chef for Ocean’s, and she is really looking forward to their plans coming to fruition.

She said: “I couldn't be happier that this has finally come around.

“It has been in the works for while and I’m so glad we have finally found and secured the perfect location we were hoping for.”
