SOUTHEND seafront is an iconic site not just in Essex, but across the country – often known for its beaches.

The beaches and surrounding attractions bring in thousands of visitors every year, and many have just recently again been given the Blue Flag award.

However, despite it being popular with many, there have been some visitors who haven’t had the best of visits…

Many of those have taken to Tripadvisor to share their views and experiences whilst visiting Southend’s beaches.

1. Bell Wharf Beach – “Not like the south of France”:

One reviewer named “Paul C”, wrote: “It is a beach, a small triangle sloped down from the wharf. Only part of it is like that. It is reasonably pleasant to dip your toes. But south of France or even north of Norfolk this is not.”

2. Chalkwell Beach – “The smells were horrific”:

Reviewer titled “Hannah S” said: “I have no idea what you people see in this place.

“The smells around were horrific, beer, tobacco, rotten fish, and urine, we had to hold our breath for most of the trip. Never again will we go back.”

3. City Beach – “The sand was wet and not dry to play with”:

One reviewer named ‘Leicester’, wrote: “Southend sea beach terrible experience.

“I visited Southend beach with my three kids and husband. We had terrible experience from the very beginning to end. The beach was dirty, filthy and shells everywhere. Sand was wet and not dry to play with. My daughter was looking forward to playing with the sand.”

4. Shoebury East Beach – “Wind was not as advertised”:

Another review called “Tonye187” wrote: “Wind was disappointing.

“I went there to do some windsurfing. When I got out the wind was not as strong as advertised and I wasn't able to sail as fast as the others.”

5. City Beach – “Sea not always available”:

One reviewed named “WhoDecidedThat” said: “This beach is great and has great potential.

“But it is a half stone / half sand beach. The tides here go out very far and so for one third of the day, the water isn't really available to play with.”
