THE history and future of a Grade II-listed country pub is set to be preserved as refurbishment plans have been unveiled.
The Bellhouse pub, in Eastwood, is seeking permission to enhance its “idyllic country charm”.
Among the planned revamp is new signs and lights around the pub on Rayleigh Road, according to the documents submitted to Southend Council.
This also involves a redecoration of the establishment’s external walls.
Shepherd Neame’s managing director for Pubs, Jonathon Swaine, said: “We are pleased to confirm that we have applied for permission to carry out some refurbishment and improvement works on the exterior of our Southend pub, The Bellhouse, as part of ongoing investment in our estate.
“They include the installation of a newly designed swing sign, as well as redecoration and signwriting, which will further enhance the well-loved Grade II listed building for our customers, and showcase what it has to offer.”
A new “illuminated” hanging sign, seven signwritten signs on the front and sides, two brass menu cases, and five lanterns on swan brackets are also proposed to be added.
This is due to condition and age of the existing signs at the pub.
The new decorations aim to not only enhance the pub’s appearance, but the signs will also replicate the impact of the existing ones to keep the building in character and in touch with its history.
The proposed scheme is hoped to highlight The Bellhouse’s appeal and maintain its status as a favourite in the borough.
Paul Collins, Lib Dem councillor responsible for the Eastwood Park Ward, said: “It is encouraging to hear about businesses willing to invest in Eastwood.
“I am sure our planners will want to make sure the plans maintain the character and protect the heritage of the Bellhouse.”
Earlier this year, The Bellhouse Pub was slammed by Southend Council for carrying out tree pruning works “poorly” and without planning permission.
