Construction has started at a new development site in Basildon which is set to deliver homes for veterans.

Sempra Homes is building the houses at Markhams Chase as part of their affordable housing programme.

It prioritises veterans while also allowing residents and essential workers to take a step up on the property ladder.

The project is part of Sempra’s Investment Partnership with Homes England, and received additional funding of £41,000 under the Government’s Brownfield Land Release Fund programme.

Sempra Homes will build three, two-bedroom, “vibrant, modern houses” specifically for veterans and key workers.

Melanie Keys, services manager at Sempra Homes, said: “We are pleased to see the construction commence at this development in Basildon.

“As well as providing these much-needed new affordable homes we are also contributing £10,000 towards Find Your Active Basildon Partnership, aimed at enhancing community health through wellbeing and physical activities aligned with the Council’s objectives.”

The Sempra Homes development at the former vacant car park will “revitalise a site unused for 15 years and subject to nuisance and antisocial behaviour”.

Melanie Keys added: “In recent years the site has suffered from fly tipping, antisocial behaviour and unlicensed fast-food sales.

“The development of this land will see the entire site used for residential purposes with private front and rear gardens and parking courts to provide much needed housing for the borough.”

In terms of specifications, the homes at Markhams Chase will boast integrated energy-efficient appliances in the kitchen.

Their design includes a Fabric First Approach to guarantee energy efficiency and adherence to National Space Standards.

Homes will also include electric vehicle charging points and within the development all mature trees will be retained alongside the creation of a wild meadow and pollinator planting to support wildlife.

A new sheltered bus stop with real time information boards will also be provided as part of the works on Markhams Close to enhance resident facilities for transport infrastructure.
