Police have provided an update on the condition of a child who was hospitalised with a serious head injury after a crash in a major Basildon road.
Emergency services rushed to a crossing in Broadmayne, Basildon, at around 8am on Friday.
This was following reports that a van had collided with two young children.
The eldest child, a girl aged four, remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition, Essex Police has confirmed.
She was reported to have sustained a serious head injury and was taken to hospital while a two-year-old was also injured, but not as seriously according to police.
An Essex Police spokesman said: "The eldest child, a young girl remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition."
The vehicle, a white Citroen panel van, stopped at the scene and Essex Police's enquiries are ongoing.
Witnesses have been urged to come forward.
