OFFICERS targeting a series of burglaries in Basildon shut off a busy road after a police chase as suspected car thieves fled on foot.
A dedicated operation involving multiple Essex Police teams has been targeting a series of burglaries and attempted burglaries in the Basildon area.
As part of this response, officers deployed in the town chased a suspected stolen vehicle on false plates last night.
At around 7pm the vehicle, a BMW, was stopped in Upper Mayne and two people jumped out and fled on foot.
They were detained a short time later by police. A 17-year-old man from Basildon, and a 19-year-old man, from Romford, were arrested.
Detective Inspector Stuart Mitchell, of Basildon's criminal investigation department, said: “We put in place a dedicated response to a number of burglaries and attempted burglaries, particularly in the Basildon area, some of which involved the subsequent theft of vehicles from outside properties.
“We understand just how concerning and frightening burglary offences are to our communities and this operation shows that these incidents are an absolute priority.
“Our enquiries are continuing into these incidents as we look to continue to build our case on the back of this significant arrest.”
The 17-year-old is being questioned on suspicion of four counts of burglary and one count of attempted burglary, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, aggravated vehicle taking, dangerous driving and driving without a licence or insurance.
The 19-year-old man will be passed to Metropolitan Police custody for questioning on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and burglary.
