TWO suspected loan sharks have been arrested and cash seized after a raid on Canvey.

A 47-year-old woman and a 66-year-old man were both arrested yesterday morning after the England Illegal Money Lending Team – who prosecute illegal lenders – teamed up with Essex Police to raid a property.

Cash and electronic devices were also seized as part of the investigation.

Both suspects have been taken into custody and are being questioned by investigators.

Dave Benbow, acting head of the Illegal Money Lending team, said: “We work hard with our partners across England to investigate reports and take action against illegal lenders.

“We realise it may be difficult for someone who has borrowed from an illegal lender to report it, but we want to reassure people that our officers are here to support borrowers however they can.

“If you, or anyone you know, thinks they have borrowed from an illegal lender, then contact our team in complete confidence.”

The woman was additionally suspected of a public order offence and the man was suspected of an offence under the malicious communications act.

The team works in partnership with Essex Trading Standards Service to investigate and prosecute illegal money lenders.

A spokesman for the Illegal Money Lending Team said: “This month marks the 20th anniversary of the Illegal Money Lending Team.

“Since its launch, the team has supported more than 32,000 people, securing 424 successful prosecutions, with illegal lenders locked up for more than 606 years.

“More than £91.3million in illegal debt has been written off.
