THE new manager of the beloved Shoebury Hotel has been unveiled – and it’s the son of the former owner of Southend’s Smithy’s pub.
Billy Smith, and his partner Caroline, have now picked up the keys and are looking forward to throwing open the doors once a huge renovation is carried out.
The exciting news comes just weeks after the Shoe Bar and Eatery inside the historic building closed when former managers Andy Dosser and Michelle Marrs stepped away over financial difficulties.
Billy is the son of the late Ted Smith, who owned Smithy’s public house on Eastern Esplanade.
He grew up in the heart and soul of Southend nightlife and helped manage the family business over many years.
Billy said: “I am extremely excited to be involved in the next chapter of this historic landmark building.
“I bring with me years of experience working with my father Ted, and a friendly, warm smile.
“I welcome all to our upcoming opening. The date will be announced in due course.
“My mantra is to create an inviting and family-friendly environment, welcoming locals and customers further afield.
“We have some great ideas for activities and events, in what will be a fresh, new look and feel for the building.
“Clearly from the petition, there has been a demand for this local icon to continue, so I look forward to meeting everyone in the coming months.”
The closure sparked an outpouring of sadness with devastated residents launching a petition pleading for it to reopen as soon as possible.
Owner of the building, Nick Kenney, promised to listen to residents and is now carrying out a huge refurb before Billy and Caroline reopen the venue.
Nick said: “The refurbishment of The Shoebury Hotel Bar and Eatery is now in full swing and an opening date will soon follow.
“We are pleased to announce ex-publican Billy Smith, will be making a return to the pub scene after many years.
"He will now be starting this new venture with his partner Caroline and would love you all to come along and support this exciting new journey."
The widow of Ted Smith, Patsy Smith, added: "It will be great to see the return of this establishment, to its former glory, once a very popular and successful public house.
"As your Dad's partner for over 25 years, I know just how pleased and proud he would be of you following in his, and your nan and grandad's footsteps.
"I have every confidence this is just what the 'city of Southend' needs."
