Search the Public Notice PortalA much-loved casino on Southend seafront has been given the green light to carry out major work to replace crumbling concrete in its roof before completing a “stunning refurbishment”.
Southend Council has approved Genting’s plans to replace the roof of its Westcliff casino, with work set to start this month.
Work is expected to take at least a year to complete, but will be completed in phases to allow the casino to remain open throughout the refurbishment project.

The first phase will see the roof replaced, before the second phase sees the interior refurbished.
Genting is replacing Raac found in the roof, which forced the casino to close briefly in November 2023 before a precautionary protective ceiling and scaffolding were put in place.
Stuart Green, general manager of Genting Casino Westcliff, added: “This is a very exciting project, which will transform one of Southend’s most recognisable landmarks.
“We are combining the necessary roof repair work with a stunning refurbishment that we are confident our guests will love.
“We look forward to delivering an amazing outcome that will show off this historic venue to its full potential, making it a go-to destination for Southend.”
The casino will continue to host its popular live events during the initial phase of the refurbishment programme in the first half of 2025 and will remain available for charity events and functions.
The popular Waterfront restaurant will also remain open in phase one, with reduced capacity, before dining is relocated to Prima, the casino’s basement venue.
During phase one of the refurbishment, the main entrance will be closed, and guests will enter the casino through the secondary entrance, which leads into the bar area.
The slots area will be moved further inside the casino.
Building work will take place during weekday working hours, minimising the impact during evenings and at weekends when the casino is at its busiest.
There will be reduced parking capacity during the day, which will be managed appropriately, together with any necessary temporary footpath closures.
