Aldi has revealed that it has created a new version of its Cuthbert the Caterpillar cake.

The iconic caterpillar cake has been on shelves for years but now, customers can get their hands on a new limited-edition version, ideal for gender reveals.

You’ll probably be aware that a gender reveal party is usually hosted by expectant parents as they and their loved ones find out the gender of their unborn baby before the birth.

In recent years, the parties have become very popular with families finding unusual ways to reveal the gender.

Research from Aldi found cake to be by far the most popular method of revealing a baby’s gender with those aged between 18-24 choosing cake twice as much as any other gender reveal option such as balloons, confetti or fireworks.

Following traditional baby names seeing a decline in popularity, 5% of Brits even admitted they would consider naming their child Cuthbert, according to the supermarket.

Aldi is launching a Cuthbert the Caterpillar celebration cake with two options available – one with blue icing inside and another with pink icing inside.

Almost half (42%) of those surveyed by Aldi expected the average gender reveal moment to set them back by anything between £100 and £500.

M&S settled its copyright row with Aldi in 2022 over accusations that the German discounter copied the design of its Colin the Caterpillar cake.

Both supermarkets confirmed an agreement had been struck but said they could not release details of the “confidential” deal.

It came after M&S first launched the lawsuit against Aldi in April 2021 in a bid to force its rival to take its Cuthbert the Caterpillar cake off the shelves and agree to not sell anything resembling it in the future.

In May of that year, Aldi started selling its caterpillar cake again after making changes to its chocolate face design.
