An Essex farm has been rated the second-best place to pick pumpkins in the country as autumn is underway.

A study by Outdoor Toys revealed Lathcoats Farm in Beehive Lane, Chelmsford, as one of the top spots in the UK to visit for pumpkins this year.

Analysing ticket prices, Instagram popularity and annual search volume, the Essex farm jumped straight to the top of the list, scoring 7.72 out of 10 in the ranking.

It attracted more than 131,000 Google searches each year and appeared in more than 1,700 social media posts on Instagram.

The family-run fruit farm is in its fourth generation and offers free entry for adults and kids to its pumpkin patch.

Lathcoats’ pumpkin festival runs between October 11 and November 1, providing photo ops, outdoor games, as well as a themed Halloween hunt game.

Experts at Outdoor Toys said on the benefits of autumn activities like pumpkin picking: “Pumpkin picking and days out at farms are about so much more than choosing the perfect pumpkin. They give families a chance to step away from screens, enjoy the fresh air, and spend time together in a way that feels relaxed and memorable.

“Even a couple of hours outdoors can make a real difference to wellbeing. This time can boost mood, reduce stress, and give children the chance to run around and explore.

“The beauty of seasonal activities like this is how naturally they bring people together. Whether it’s little ones proudly carrying their pumpkins, friends snapping photos in the fields, or parents soaking up a moment of calm, the experience creates lasting memories.

“And with farms offering everything from outdoor games to photo opportunities, it’s a reminder that getting outdoors doesn’t have to be complicated, and sometimes the simplest traditions are the ones that bring the most joy.”

The farm also grows more than 40 varieties of apples, summer fruits, and offers animal experiences.
