A group of young men, including a former gold-medal-winning diver, have been put behind bars for using machetes to stab two men in Colchester.

On July 10 last year, Regan Humphries, Tyler Humphries, and Kye Perkins were caught on CCTV arriving in Howe Close.

The trio was captured attacking two men with machetes with the footage show the victims screaming in pain.

Hannah Wilson, prosecuting, told Ipswich Crown Court on Tuesday, two cars arrived at the scene, with the victims being attacked while on the floor.

Mrs Wilson said: “Both victims were taken to Colchester Hospital for their injuries.

“The first victim suffered multiple stab wounds to his right thigh, elbow, lower torso, his hamstring, and hand, while the second victim also suffered wounds to his torso and hand.”

Police picked up one of the cars, a silver Seat Leon, driving along St John’s Road, following the incident.

The car flagged up in the system as it was using cloned plates, the court heard.

Officers pursued the Seat, which sped up to 80mph and crashed into a brick wall, and finally came to a stop in a field.

Kevin Toomey, mitigating for Regan Humphries, told the court the young father-of-three was remorseful.

He said: “There is no excuse for what is quite clearly impulsive and appalling behaviour.

“He was young and stupid.”

The court also heard about Tyler Humphries, who was a gold-medal-winning diver, competing internationally, had fallen into depression following a severe injury.

Nick Bonehill, mitigating, read from a letter: “I lost myself when I lost my career. I turned to drugs and alcohol to deal with the pain. I was depressed.”

Mr Bonehill also told the court about the difficulties Perkins faced when he was a child, as the son of a troubled ex-paratrooper who got deported to the Caribbean, he spent years in the care system.

Sentencing the trio, recorder Emma Nash said: “This could have easily resulted in death.

“To your great fortune, it did not.”

Tyler Humphries, 23, of Hickory Avenue, Colchester, was sentenced to a total of six and a half years imprisonment, Regan Humphries, 21, of Boundary Way, Shoeburyness, was sentenced to seven and a half years imprisonment and Perkins, 19, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to four years and one month.

All have been served with a restraining order lasting for five years, while Perkins was also banned from driving for two years.
