A large five-bedroom house where an iconic British rock star used to live has been put up for sale.

Woodley, the countryside property, used to be the residence of Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour, and is on the market for a guide price of £1.1 million.

Found on the outskirts of Roydon, between the neighbouring towns of Harlow and Broadley Common, in Epping, the house has three reception rooms, an island, several outbuildings and spans over more than 4.5 acres.

The property has been listed by estate agent Savills, which describes it as "a fine, historic home" that is "set in wonderful grounds".

David Gilmour joined legendary rock band Pink Floyd in 1967, just before founding member Syd Barrett left the group.

As a member of Pink Floyd, he was inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005.

Gilmour bought Woodley in the early 1970s and lived there with his first wife, Ginger Gilmour, during the early years of the group’s success.

The home for sale is approached via a gravel driveway and sits in grounds that total 4.66 acres.

The ground floor has three reception rooms, a kitchen/breakfast room, a utility room, a pantry and a guest cloakroom.

The first floor is where you will find the house's five bedrooms as well as a family bathroom.

The surrounding grounds are mostly grass, with a lake at the far end that extends to about an acre and includes an island.

There are also several outbuildings, including garages, stables and a summer house.

The large property needs modernisation, with an opportunity to extensively revamp it.

Property agent David Bloomfield, director in the residential sales team at Savills in Loughton, said: "There are several articles documenting David Gilmour’s time at Woodley in the early 1970s, with one of the outbuildings believed to have been used as a recording studio.

"Set in wonderful grounds, it offers the ideal opportunity for a buyer to put their own stamp on a fine, historic home with a link to one of the UK’s pioneering rock bands."

Mr Bloomfield added: "It’s a very popular part of the world for those who want to move out of London but still need to be close enough for a daily commute.

"There are regular rail services into London Liverpool Street via nearby Roydon and Harlow Mill, the area is served by a number of well-regarded state and private schools, there’s plenty of shopping and leisure facilities nearby and there’s lots of green space to enjoy – with both RSPB Rye Meads and Epping Forest not too far away."
