A former TOWIE star is calling for new safety rules after a serious accident involving her young son.

Chloe Lewis, who appeared on The Only Way Is Essex, has launched a petition demanding that protective gloves be made mandatory for children at ice rinks after her six-year-old son, Beau, lost the top half of his finger in a New Year's Eve skating accident.

The petition, which now has more than 24,000 signatures, urges the UK Government to introduce the requirement nationwide.

Lewis said: "I don’t want to see any other parent go through what I went through, and child as well.

"One day, hopefully, I can tell him (Beau) that we changed the law.

"I can’t bring back your finger, but one day, we’ve changed the law and made it better for other children – and safer."

She told ITV’s Good Morning Britain that Beau was wearing gloves but had taken them off briefly before the incident.

He was taken to the Royal London Hospital, where surgeons attempted to reattach it, but the operation was unsuccessful.

The reality star described the accident as "the call that no parent ever wants to receive."

Following the incident, Planet Ice updated its safety policy and will require children under 12 to wear gloves at all of its venues from June 1.

However, Lewis believes a nationwide policy is needed to protect children at all rinks, not just those operated by Planet Ice.

Because her petition has surpassed 10,000 signatures, the Government is required to respond.

If it reaches 100,000 signatures, Parliament will be required to debate it.
