AN abuser has been jailed for three years and banned from a road in Leigh after a campaign of violence against his wife.
Edwin Sundaram, 48, of Shenfield Road, Brentwood, was sentenced at Basildon Crown Court for offences including suffocation.
He entered into a plea bargain as his trial was about to begin, admitting three offences. The prosecution agreed that three others could lie on file.
Sundaram admitted two counts of intentionally suffocating his wife, in August and September 2025.
He also admitted one count of assaulting her and causing her actual bodily harm (ABH).
Two counts of intentional strangulation and one of engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour were allowed to lie on file.
The coercive and controlling behaviour charge had alleged that between 2023 and 2025, he had “assaulted the victim on numerous occasions”, prevented her from seeing family, taken her mobile phone away and monitored her communications.

Judge John Bristow sentenced Sundaram to 18 months in prison for each of the strangulation charges and ordered those two sentences to be served consecutively.
He sentenced him to another 18 months for the assault occasioning ABH, but said that would run concurrently – so the total sentence was three years.
He also slapped Sundaram with a restraining order which banned him from contacting his wife directly or indirectly, other than through lawyers or the family court.
He was also banned from entering a road in Leigh “for any reason whatsoever”.
The restraining order was imposed for five years.
